Five months

Forgive us Lyla, we haven’t been paying close enough attention to those developmental milestone charts.

We noticed that you seemed to roll over pretty early and you’ve been doing your little mini-pushups for ages, and now you’re starting to lift your butt and your hands at the same time, just for a few seconds. “Those legs are like an eight-month-old’s,” uber-nanny Yani said the other day, pointing to your chunky little squirming thighs. So we’ve been relaxed — you’re progressing, very clearly, so why bother with those darned charts?

This morning Mum thought she’d just check to see when it is babies are supposed to start crawling. Aha! First it seems, comes sitting — and hey, that was supposed to happen about the time you started rolling over. Ahem, that’d be about two months ago. (Though apparently eight months is a sort of deadline, by when about 90 percent of bubs sit up.) Though Mum has occasionally sat you up to play, she’s usually kept hold of you, thinking there’s no way you’d be able to sit on your own — you’re so wobbly. But this morning, Mum and Dad sat you up on your own. And you just stayed there. And stayed there. Before plunging forward into a most excellent forward cobbler’s pose.

We’d better start childproofing quick smart.

Happy five months, pumpkin!
