Balance and moderation

I spent the morning today walking the streets of Saigon — it’s quite an interesting and pretty city to walk, and while the footpaths are often clogged with parked motorbikes later in the day, in the early morning they’re often clear and as the temperature is slightly cooler that time of day — it’s a good time to wander.

There’s loads of streetside cafes (both street-hawkers and funky, free wifi type joints) and, as the day warmed (or perhaps just got even hotter) I found myself seeking solace in more and more air-con cafes. By the time I’d finished my walk I’d had about sixteen coffees too many and it took me till now for the jittery hands to settle down — now I understand why they say those with a bun in the oven shouldn’t drink coffee when they are expecting — if they do the baby starts bouncing off the walls like I’ve been — and bouncing babies make Mummy uncomfortable.

I remember years ago some advertising campaign to encourage women not to drink when pregnant, the catchphrase of the campaign went along the lines of ;

“After one glass of wine your baby is unconscious”

I can imagine how thrilled the Hunter Valley was over that one!

I don’t know if the phrase is even true, but, like the Grim Reaper adverts and any Moccona ad that featured “Reggie darling”, it really stayed with me.

But it’s all about balance and moderation right? After researching the Czech beer hall last night I can certainly attest to the importance of moderation — and I’m not even pregnant…

So I’ve decided to turn a new leaf, and tomorrow during my morning work, after ten coffees I’ll switch to beer — that should help then to negate each other out.
