This having a baby thing has been a bit catalyst for new ideas and schemes related to travel and children (aside from me having a new person to send to look at guesthouses!)
One of my ideas yesterday was a childcare spot particularly aimed at travellers… More and more independent travellers are hitting the road, rugrats in tow and I bet a lot of them could really do with a holiday from a holiday now and then…so that’s where our “baby traveller cafe” comes in.

We’ve been asking around about what others with little people looked for in their house. As I mentioned earier, we may be looking at a change of cities once we have our own little person and while we’d love to have a replica of our Jakarta house in a different country, it may not be that easy — after all a little person has different needs to bigger (and rounder) people like S and me.

At least to the hand S is showing now (or should that be feeling?) and I’ve developed a rather irritating habit of rubbing the belly in public.
It’s not my fault I just can’t help it — it isnt like I’m thinking I’m rubbing the Buddha belly or something like that but this whole thing is still doing my head in a little, and rubbing the belly is about all I can do.

So today we picked up S’s friend J who has come out to Samui from the US of A. A 24-hour epic journey (from LA to Tapei, then to Bangkok then to Samui) J looked a little dazed as confused as we sat squelching out feet in the sand eating a Thai seafood dinner.
Aside from bringing herself out, J also brought out a selection of pregnant fashion from the US for S and let me tell you, these clothes are big. The idea of S actually managing to expand enough to fill out some of these clothes is a bit jaw-dropping and S’s eyes were rolling around in her head a little at the thought of getting THAT big.
Up till now she’s been wearing Thai fisherman’s pants which are ideal as they’re designed to accommodate anything including a fisherman’s beer-gut and so can deal with pregnancy easily.
S’s posture has also changed slightly – it must be a subconscious change as S wasn’t aware of it, but she sits and walks differently — I think the changes will become more prominent as she becomes more pregnant.
Note I didn’t use the word waddle…

So today we broke through into the next trimester, passed out of the “got to keep this a secret danger zone” and I’m just about to send an email out to every person we’ve just about ever met to let them know what is going on.
Sooo, if you just got an email from me and don’t want to spend all day reading about S’s snorking, burping and expanding, please use the categories to your right to follow different issues (food, baby pics, food and cravings).
I make one post a day, and while S has been threatening to add comments many times, I’m yet to read one.
All comments more than welcome!
P.S. I’m struggling to keepthis anonymous, so please refer to S as S rather than you know who… thanks!

If baby is a boy, he should be able to ride waves like this!
So as every day passes, baby exerts a little more influence on S. To stay with the Simpsons for a moment (from yesterday’s entry) you’re probably familiar with Barney, Homer’s friend who holds up the bar most episodes… well Barney has a particularly gross belch — one that makes his lips vibrate and objects around the room reverberate — well that is how S burps now. Sometimes in the middle of the night, burps of incredible volume literally explode out of her mouth.
Last night a mega-burp woke me bolt upright, but S hardly flinched.
Still half-asleep she just rubbed her tummy and said;
“Sorry, was baby”

So you must all know the Simpsons episode where Homer is talking about how they came up with the kid’s names and Homer mentions how the most important criteria was making sure the name was one that could not be a source of ridicule. So with his son’s name (Bart) he says;
“Art, Bart, Cart, Dart, Eart — see Marge, nothing wrong with that name”.

So yesterday I touched on what the baby would look like if we were both Mafia dons, but as we’re not, we’ve put a bit more thought into it and have come up with the following:
As we’re both tall (me 6ft and S slightly shorter, though that is a point of contention), baby will be tall.
As we both wear glasses and have done since a young age, baby probably won’t have 20/20 vision.
As we both love to cook and eat, baby will be well-endowed with sensitive taste-buds.
Further points I’d like to see baby inherit are:
S’s intelligence and fine looks
My work ethic and dedication to the art of hammock-stringing
Factors I’d rather not see inherited include:
S’s washing-up ability
My receeding hairline
But who gets to say in these things — let’s just hope we don’t get a balding workaholic who doesn’t know how to string a hammock.
Talking about hammocks, I gotta get back to the pool — the weather here on the beach is just glorious!

Today was our first full day on Ko Samui and aside from a walk up the beach to see our friend Gina who is fasting at Spa Samui, S has mostly slept and ate while I’ve battled with sorting out an internet connection — seems I got the short straw.
Now that work is out of the way, S has two distinct modes — eat and sleep. While I’d seen hints of this modular behaviour before, its only now with the distraction and background noise of work out of the way, that I can see with absolute clarity her phases.

Pico Iyer wrote a good book with this very title, talking about people like S and I who spend much of their lives away from their “home country” and he coined the term global soul to decribe them. While the terms fits us pretty well, during our flight down to Ko Samui we were talking about our Global Baby.
Here’s the breakdown:
Discovered in Timor Leste, manufactured in Indonesia, developed in Thailand and 100% Australian made… and we’re only at 12 weeks!
